Location and Transportation

The Academy of Natural Sciences is on Logan Circle at 19th St. and Benjamin Franklin Parkway, next to the Four Seasons Hotel. It is a short walk from Rittenhouse Square, Comcast Center and Suburban Station. The Center City PHLASH bus and SEPTA routes 32, 33, 38 and 76 serve Logan Circle. Driving times are about 20 minutes from Bryn Mawr, Chestnut Hill, or Haddonfield to the nearby Vine St. Expressway exit.

 

Excellent Parking

There is ample street meter parking in the Parkway area – many allow 3 to 12 hours. After 5:00 PM, meters are free on Wednesdays (except on posted rush hour streets, where they are free after 6:30). Adjacent lots and garages have reduced evening rates.

 

Convenient Dining Before the Show

Restaurants near the Academy of Natural Sciences include Asia on the Parkway, the Four Seasons Hotel, TGI Friday's, Mace's Crossing, Mexican Post, Public House, and Mission Grill. The Academy's Ecology Cafe is open for lunch - show your ticket for a 10% discount in the Cafe.

Board the Copper Canyon Railroad for a spectacular ride. Cross to Baja, winter home of migrating gray whales. Enjoy golden Pacific beaches from Puerto Vallarta to Zihuatanejo. Visit gorgeous Morelia. See the wealthy heritage of Spanish “Silver Cities” Taxco, Guanajuato, and Zacatecas.

   

CUBA - HAVANA to SANTIAGO DE CUBA

Hail a ride from a rolling museum of 1950’s American cars to tour Havana’s Spanish colonial buildings, opera house, El Morro fortress, casinos, and hotels. Drive to the lovely Vinales valley past sparkling beaches to the crown jewel Trinidad and vibrant carnival city of Santiago de Cuba.

   

WINE REGIONS of FRANCE

November 17 - presented by Mary Lee and Sid Nolan

Visit Paris - City of Light, then circle the country’s beautiful wine regions ... the Loire, Bordeaux, Pays Basque, Languedoc, Provence, Côtes du Rhône, Burgundy, Alsace, Champagne. To great wines and cuisine, the Nolans add history, art, architecture, and charming inns for a perfect trip.

DISCOVERING the DUTCH

Explore nine of the twelve lowland provinces, each with its own unique culture and origin. From exciting Amsterdam go to Schiedam for gin and the world’s tallest windmills, Aalsmeer’s flower auction, the resort town Maastricht near the Belgian border, and more.

   

PAPUA NEW GUINEA to the ENDS OF THE EARTH

March 9 - presented by Anne Doubilet

Underwater explorer, writer, and photographer Anne Doubilet has made over 5,000 dives all over the world, including the Antarctic and Arctic. Alarmed by vanishing corals and melting icebergs, she is filming the fragile underwater world for future generations. Hear tales of her adventures and view stunning images of her journeys on land and under the seas.

   

EAST AFRICAN SAFARI

March 23 - presented by Rick Ray

Take an exotic look at Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, and more. Go gorilla trekking in jungles along the Rwanda-Congo border, get close up with Serengeti wildebeests, sleep in elite treehouse lodges, and view thousands of elephants in early morning light with snow-clad Kilimanjaro in the distance.

   

REMOTE CORNERS OF CHINA

April 13 - presented by Ryan Pyle and Brandon Zatt

Photographer Ryan Pyle and journalist Brandon Zatt take us Himalayan hill walking on the Chinese- Tibetan Divide, sharing stories and photos of pilgrimage routes near Minya Konka and Kawa Karpo. Living in China, both are keen observers of its fast-paced development and vanishing culture.
