The last one visited…
Treasures of the South Caucasus with Kathy Kaplan
Kathy traveled to the Caucasus after reading Ali and Nino, the great romantic Azerbaijani novel of the 1930’s. She found the Caucasus region to be even more exotic than the fictional story. The medieval city of Baku with its Palace of the Shirvanshahs, the Georgian “table” accompanied by traditional polyphonic singing, and the view of majestic Mount Ararat from Armenia’s Khor Virap monastery all contributed to a fascinating cultural journey.

Travels in the Mountains of Darjeeling and Sikkim with Anne Stokes Hochberg
Darjeeling, in the Indian state of West Bengal, is home to the famous “Toy Train”, an old, narrow-gauge steam train. Nearby Tiger Hill affords a sunrise view of Mt. Kanchenjunga in the far-away Himalayas. Anne  will share her photos taken there, continuing on to the Tibetan-style monasteries and environs of Gangtok and Kalimpong

Splendors of Bali with Tom Tauber

Magical Bali! Although the island’s beaches are crowded with tourists, the Balinese have managed to retain much of their cultural vibrancy and spiritual strength. They are mostly Hindu but practice a complicated mixture of Hinduism, ancestor worship and nature-animism. On any given day, a visitor can come across processions that are highlights of temple festivals. It’s estimated that Bali has 200,000 temples! Bali’s dances, ceremonies and masques are legendary and a photographer’s dream. Tom will share his photographs and impressions from a recent 10-day journey through Bali.

We are a networking group of active travelers who meet approximately four times a year in the Philadelphia area to share information and photographs about our trips. Our purpose is to help each other find new places to travel to, and to pass on our experiences so our fellow travelers can benefit from them.
